Today the town hall, formerly the administration and research building of the Wolfen film factory – the former building 041 has seen a lot in its history and bears witness to different states and systems. Built by the National Socialists between 1936 and 1939, the monumental building housed offices and laboratories for the film factory as well as a scientific library, an exhibition hall for Agfa products, an auditorium and a conference hall. After the war, the film factory first became Soviet property, then a state-owned enterprise. Important decisions continued to be made in the round building, Agfa became ORWO (Original Wolfen) and film production picked up speed. The closure of the film factory in the 1990s was followed by vacancy and vandalism until the building was used again in 2010 after several years of renovation by Wohnungs- und Baugesellschaft Wolfen mbH. Today, the city council meets and the city administration works here. The auditorium in the center of the building is also an impressive remnant from the days of the film factory and is now used for events and film screenings.
