Exactly 40 years ago, one of the GDR’s first environmental demonstrations took place between Bitterfeld and Wolfen. At the time, the region was considered one of the most toxic in Europe. Today there are forests and bathing lakes in the region again. However, the so-called eternity problem lurks beneath the former toxic waste dumps as a legacy of 140 years of industrial history. Based on the walk and parade on the same topic, we ask why there is so little acceptance of ecological issues in the region today and what can be learned from the past for the future.
