It was regarded as the art academy in the GDR: the weißensee kunsthochschule berlin. To this day, it is still grappling with its relationship to East Germany.
The weißensee academy of art berlin was founded in 1946 as an alternative to the traditional academy. Originating from the teaching and ideas of the Bauhaus, the university is characterized by a special profile: It offers more than 800 students a one-year, interdisciplinary foundation course. The artistic and creative foundations are followed by diploma courses in Fine Arts as well as Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Design. The university also offers postgraduate Master’s courses in Art Therapy and Spatial Strategies.
