MEIN FERNER OSTEN

The artist Fungi Fung is the daughter of Vietnamese contract workers. In her photographs, she explores her mother’s life in the GDR, the post-reunification period and today and invites us on a personal journey to a country that no longer exists, but is still present.

As the child of Vietnamese contract workers, the artist Fungi Fung grew up in Saxony-Anhalt. She returned there after many years away to follow in her mother’s footsteps in the former GDR and the post-reunification period. What did these places trigger in her back then and what do they trigger today? How much of the East is still in her? What prevails, feelings of fear, sadness or a sense of home? Fungi Fung’s photographs show a country that no longer exists and yet is still present. Through visual snapshots and short texts, she takes the viewer on a personal journey.
