AUF BESCHÄDIGTEM PLANETEN

Studierende der Hochschule für Bildende Künste – Städelschule Frankfurt (Main) (Cohabitation Class)

How can humans and nature live together on a damaged planet, how can they treat each other with respect? Students at the Städelschule Frankfurt (Main) under the direction of Prof. Benjamin Foerster-Baldenius are exploring these questions in several installations and actions.

How can humans and other species survive together? How can people treat other species with respect and as equals, how can they listen to each other? In view of the ongoing destruction of the planet, the students of the newly created subject „Cohabitation“ at Frankfurt’s Städelschule, under the direction of Prof. Benjamin Foerster-Baldenius, are exploring the possibilities of humans and nature living and cohabiting together. They have set up various installations on the Parcours site between the old fire station and the Wolfen Industry and Film Museum. The performance and renegotiation of the space between us humans and all living species, their different cultures and forms of communication is just as much a part of their research as the search for new languages of knowledge and formats of expression. In addition to the installations, various actions in public space also bear witness to the search for new forms of coexistence from a human perspective.

The following installations and actions can be seen:

FALL4ME
Hendrik Arns and Mia Jacob
this is not about death, this is about everything

The performance AS RESEARCH examines the possibility of realizing language. Understanding text as a score, FALL4ME detaches itself from the text surface and transforms it into the plastic.

UP! UP! MY FRIEND, THE PINBALL GAME OF NATURE AWAITS YOU
Seongbin Ma
The title is a metaphor for nature reclaiming its territory and allowing new life to blossom on a former industrial site in Wolfen. Despite past challenges, it symbolizes the cycle of regeneration.

LETTING LETTUCE GROW OVER IT
Jana Köhle
Today, Bitterfeld-Wolfen is surrounded by lush vegetation. But this impression
disguises a hidden reality. „Letting lettuce grow over it“ is a sculpture that
environmental problems, in particular soil and groundwater pollution.

THE REALIZATION OF HISTORY
Alevtyna Melnychuk
The installation depicts the production of Molotov cocktails as broadcast during the early Ukrainian war. It captures the widespread mobilization and impact of the city’s defensive preparation and reflects on this pivotal moment.

DKBIÖR
Raúl Itamar Lima
The installation is an attempt to bring the public lighting of Wolfen into the former
light conditions of the ORWO factory.

GOLFING
Nave Knafo in collaboration with Seongbing Ma, Jana Köhle, Raúl Itamar Lima
The installation interweaves Wolfen’s legacy with miniature golf. Players hit through miniatures of urban landmarks such as the Industrial and Film Museum or the town hall. Each hole holds stories and twists. The architecture creates discovery and community and invites you to play, dream and explore.

ACTION: WE CELEBRATE YOUR BIRTHDAY
Laila Zaidi Touis
For all those born on 8 June, the artist is organizing a public birthday party on the festival grounds. We celebrate your birthday and invite you to come by on June 8th with a birthday candle. The event is an artistic work in the tradition of the Fluxus movement and the relational aesthetics of the 1990s.

WIND IN WOLVES
Laila Zaidi Touis
This film installation interweaves film footage from Wolfen, interviews with older residents and experts, and salvaged archive videos from Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, some of which date back to 1920 and have been specially restored for this project. This work represents an ongoing research project that attempts to connect to the subtle layers of the inner and emotional life of Wolfen’s past through the artist’s personal perspective and life experience.

PERPETUUM SLIDE
Jacek Vasina
The sculpture is a loose commentary on the idea of the „work contribution“. Under the guise of an abstract and dynamic collage of materials lies the seemingly simple idea of combining the model of the perpetuum mobile with ice skates. On a fake ice surface, the sculpture attempts to move along a defined path while constantly functioning. The work flirts with the idea of laughter through crying, and in this case not so much through crying, but as a blind, powerful dose of
of labor. It captures an absurd moment.

With works by: Hendrik Arns, Jana Köhle, Nave Knafo, Raúl Itamar Lima, Seongbing Ma, Jana Köhle, Alevtyna Melnychuk, Jacek Vasina and Laila Zaidi Touis.
