Founded in 1843 by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, the HMT was the first German conservatory to develop into a leading teaching institution in Europe. The building at Grassistraße 8 was inaugurated in 1887. The university has around 1200 students and three faculties with 12 departments and institutes. The approx. 600 events each year are open to the public.
