Silke Huysmans & Hannes Dereere

Silke Huysmans, born 1989 in Brazil, is an actress and theatre maker. Hannes Dereere, born 1990 in Ghent, is a theatre scholar and theatre maker. Both studied at the KASK School of Arts in Ghent. In their productions, Silke Huysmans and Hannes Dereere investigate journalistic and documentary elements within theatre. Underlying their work is extensive field research that they use to shape their projects. 

Since 2016, Huysmans and Dereere have been working on a trilogy on mining. In their play “Mining stories” they examine the consequences of a mining disaster in Brazil where Huysmans grew up. The performance “Pleasant Island” tells of the economically and ecologically exploited Pacific island Nauru. “Out of the Blue” concludes the trilogy. In this final piece Huysmans and Dereere look at the future of mining: the emerging industry of deep sea mining.
